Learning to drive in downtown Toronto is different from anywhere else in Ontario. Streetcars, cyclists, one-way streets and constant pedestrian traffic demand sharp awareness. Ezee Driving School gives downtown learners private, one-on-one lessons with MTO-certified instructors who teach you to stay calm and in control in the busiest part of the city.

Many downtown residents don't own a car, so practice time is limited. That's why every Ezee lesson is focused and efficient. We pick you up from your condo, office or campus, work on exactly the skills you need, and help you get road-test ready without wasting lessons.

Downtown driving skills we teach

Driving safely around streetcars

Ontario law requires you to stop behind the rear doors of a streetcar when they open to let passengers on and off, unless there's a safety island. We practise this on real streetcar routes, along with how to handle track lanes, turning across tracks and streetcar right-of-way areas.

Sharing the road with cyclists and pedestrians

Downtown has some of the busiest bike lanes and crosswalks in Canada. You'll learn shoulder checks for cyclists before right turns, safe passing distance, the rules at pedestrian crossovers and how to open your door safely when parked.

One-way streets, lane positioning and parking

We cover turning from and onto one-way streets, choosing the correct lane early and tight-space parking such as parallel parking on busy streets.

G2 and G road test preparation

There's no DriveTest centre downtown, so most of our downtown students road test at Toronto Downsview (37 Carl Hall Rd) or Toronto Metro East (1448 Lawrence Ave E, Unit 15). We prepare you for the type of roads used around your chosen centre, which are often quite different from downtown streets, with faster arterials, residential four-way stops and school zones.

For the G test, we practise expressway driving on the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway, including merging, lane changes at speed and safe exits.

Want to use our car for your test? Our car for road test service includes a free warm-up lesson. We can pick you up downtown and drive you to the centre.

Newcomers living downtown

Downtown Toronto is home to many international students and newcomers. If you already drive in another country, our intensive newcomer program, often about five days, adapts your experience to Ontario rules and road test standards.

Tips for new drivers in downtown Toronto

  • Look twice for cyclists. Before every right turn, shoulder check for bikes in the lane beside you. Many collisions downtown happen this way.
  • Know the streetcar rules. Stop at least 2 metres behind the rear doors of a stopped streetcar when its doors open, unless there's a safety island.
  • Plan your lane early. Downtown intersections often have turn restrictions and lanes that end suddenly. Read signs ahead and move into position early.
  • Expect pedestrians everywhere. People cross mid-block and step out between parked cars. Keep your speed down and your eyes moving.
  • Stay calm in traffic. Gridlock is normal downtown. A calm, patient driver makes better decisions and is safer.

Why downtown practice makes you a better driver

Students who learn downtown often find their road test easier than expected. After handling streetcars, bike lanes and heavy pedestrian traffic, the suburban roads around most test centres feel calmer. We use that advantage, but we also make sure you practise the specific things you'll face on test day, like higher speed limits, residential four-way stops and school zones.
